Hello
there, my name is Gill. The little guy over on the left doesn't really
look like me but if you met me at the lake you would say "That's
him" (my ears aren't that big). Getting down to business,
the reason I'm here is to help you become better fishermen and women.
Fishing can be a very rewarding and enjoyable way to spend
a day down at the lake or stream. I'll try to answer all questions to the best of my ability, using all my vast experience and knowledge, and if I don't have the answer to you're question don't worry- I'll make one up. I can be reached at "askgill@fishwlb.com" and will get your question as quickly as I can. Thank You: Gill |
QUESTION: Hi Gill: I am confused by all the colors that
fishing lures come in. Are some better that others? Is color really that
important?
Danny D., Franklin N.H.
ANSWER: Dan thanks for writing and bringing up this important subject. Color is very important to fishing, a fish will ignore a lure that looks fake or wrong just like you wouldn't pick out a blue banana or yellow cherry from the market. We are trying to match what the fish finds in the lake for food, fly fishermen call it "Matching The Hatch" meaning that they are copying what the fish are eating with there flies. What color to choose is the real problem, if you don't know what the forage fish are of a lake or pond then you will have to experiment and try different colors till you find one that works. As a general rule I start with Nickel on bright sunny days and Gold or Copper on cloudy or overcast days. But remember that if you are not having any luck, change something !; whether it's color, size, location or how deep you are fishing. If you're getting skunked do something about it...Change!
